Uloop Morning Scoop: Texas A&M Athlete Hounded by NCAA, Va. Tech Professor Jailed and Ivy League Madness

By Uloop Staff on September 26, 2017

Tuesday, how you doing? Going to be one of those weeks, we think, so you better start by getting smart with the Uloop Morning Scoop, a dose of knowledge that will make you the one in the know on campus, because you know what’s happening outside of campus:

North Korea says Trumps recent comments were a declaration of war

Did they or did they say we declared war? (Image:YouTube screenshot/ABC)

The New York Times reports, “North Korea threatened on Monday to shoot down American warplanes even if they were not in the country’s airspace, stating that President Trump’s comments suggesting he would eradicate North Korea and its leaders were ‘a declaration of war.’”

This warning came from Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho of North Korea, further escalating tensions between the U.S. and the Asian nation. After no immediate comment, administration officials denied the U.S. had declared war.

Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, Trump’s national security adviser, told a conference hours after Ri’s comment, “…that the administration had no set preconditions for talks with North Korea. But he said any new negotiations must be held ‘under conditions that are different from previous talks,’ which he said were drawn out and yielded little progress.”

THE NCAA is giving a Texas A&M student-athlete a hard time

Texas A&M freshman track & field athlete Ryan Trahan has two things. His own business (a water bottle company called Neptune Bottle) and a YouTube channel. Awful Announcing picks it up from there:

“On Wednesday, he (Trahan) posted a video on his channel claiming that the NCAA is forcing him to apply for a waiver in order to continue to operate his business, while also not referencing either his business or his athletic career at Texas A&M.”

In the same video, Trahan says: “I don’t understand how I’m allowed to have a job at McDonald’s or something while being a student-athlete,” Trahan said in his latest video post. “But I can’t have a company that I’m passionate about, that I’ve been working on for over a year now and keep my identity. Like, how is that right in any way?”

Va. Tech professor accused of scamming the government

Professor Yiheng Percival Zhang (Image: Roanoke Police Department)

A biological systems engineering professor at Virginia Tech is in some very hot water over more than a million bucks in government funding. The Roanoke (Va.) Times reports that “Yiheng Percival Zhang, 46, is charged with wire fraud, making criminal false claims and making false statements to the “detriment of the United States Government’s innovation and development programs,” according to a federal affidavit filed in the U.S. Western District Court of Virginia.”

Zhang was arrested last week and remains in jail. His lawyer is proclaiming his innocence in the case, but according to the Times, “Zhang, along with Tech graduate Zhiguang Zhu and postdoctoral researcher Chun You, are alleged to have defrauded the university, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy by withholding grant funds.”

We’ll keep an eye on developments in this case.

And finally, the Ivy League is kind of the Hollywood of college, right?

Yeah, we think so too, which is why we started ‘A Peek Inside the Ivy.’ It’s a weekly look at what’s happening inside and outside of America’s most elite colleges, where the students are just like you, except, you know, they go to an Ivy League school.

This week, we report on the arrest of a Cornell student accused of assault and using a racial slur, the Instagram account sad boys of Columbia and how Brown is trying to eliminate student debt.

Also, as pictured above, a lot of Princeton students prepping out.

That’s it for Tuesday, now go do your academic duty!

And remember, you can use Uloop to find a part time job on your campus, connect with a tutor or get a head start on housing for next year.  And don’t forget, if you’re into that email thing:
